Gaza Ministry of Social Development: We call for international intervention to protect Palestinian women and urge concerted efforts to empower breadwinners and widows.

Gaza Ministry of Social Development: ▪We call for international intervention to protect Palestinian women and urge concerted efforts to empower breadwinners and widows. ▪On the occasion of the Palestinian Women’s National Day, which falls on October 26, we affirm that this occasion represents a national milestone to renew the firm commitment to women’s rights and to underscore their leading role in protecting the social fabric and confronting the conditions of war, displacement, and poverty. ▪This great struggle and humanitarian role carried out by Palestinian women is matched by an extremely harsh and complex humanitarian reality due to the continued Israeli occupation aggression and the ongoing siege, and the resulting direct targeting of Palestinian women, forced displacement, loss of safety, and unprecedented psychological, social, and economic pressures that impose doubled burdens on the most vulnerable groups, including widows, women who support their families, survivors of violence, and abandoned women who face life’s circumstances without support. ▪In this context, the official statistical data issued by the Ministry and the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics for 2026 revealed the scale of the exceptional burdens borne by women in the Gaza Strip, where the number of households headed by women is estimated at about 123,588 households due to the martyrdom of the breadwinner, the collapse of income sources, and the comprehensive destruction of property. ▪Official reports indicate that 28,580 women have lost their husbands since October 7, 2023, leaving them to face alone the burdens of providing support and securing shelter, food, and water in a harsh displacement environment. ▪In terms of protection, 1,625 women received specialized support and protection services (psychological, social, and legal interventions), in addition to receiving direct services through protection and care departments (including abandoned women, women without support, and divorced women), and 634 cases were handled through designated consultation hotlines, in addition to 420 follow-up cases after intervention. Based on the above, we affirm the following: ▪We call on the international community, UN bodies, and human rights institutions to exert immediate pressure to stop the Israeli occupation aggression, end the siege, hold it accountable for its crimes against Palestinian women, and provide urgent international protection for them and their families in accordance with international treaties and charters. ▪We call on international and UN organizations and partner relief agencies to expand the umbrella of social protection and provide emergency and periodic relief and financial assistance to widows and women who support their families in a sustainable manner to alleviate the effects of war and displacement. ▪We call on civil society and human rights institutions, as well as United Nations bodies, to develop the protection system and strengthen shelter, psychological and social care, and legal consultation services for survivors of violence whose suffering has worsened under the current conditions. ▪We call on judicial and legal bodies and relevant institutions to press for the enforcement of the legal and financial rights of abandoned women and those deprived of alimony to ensure a dignified life for their families. ▪We call on development institutions, the private sector, and international partners to work on providing opportunities for economic empowerment, vocational training programs, and financing for small projects to strengthen women and facilitate their recovery after the war. ▪We affirm that empowering Palestinian women is an inherent right and a collective national responsibility, and we renew our commitment to continue providing services and safeguarding women’s dignity and rights as a fundamental standard for the justice and stability of society despite all circumstances.
