Urgent | Safa follow-up | Ministry of Education and Higher Education:
▪ Global silence over attacks on students and universities is tantamount to encouraging the occupation to continue its crimes.
▪ We condemn the injury of five students, some of them with very serious injuries, as a result of the occupation’s shelling of the campus of the Islamic University in Gaza City this Sunday morning while they were present to receive lectures and lessons.
▪ We affirm our support for the Islamic University and commend the decision to suspend classes to preserve the lives of students.
▪ 95% of the buildings of higher education institutions in the Gaza Strip were damaged as a result of the war.
▪ 10 students and a teacher were martyred during the past six days in the context of the ongoing attacks on the education sector.
▪ We call for obliging the occupation to abide by international laws and humanitarian norms and to avoid targeting educational institutions and civilian objects.
▪ We call on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and international institutions to condemn the attacks and exert pressure to protect the Palestinian education system.
▪ We affirm the continued operation of Palestinian academic institutions in carrying out their role despite attempts at repression and intimidation.
