Member of the Political Bureau and Head of the Jerusalem Affairs Office in the Hamas movement, Haroun Nasser al-Din:
▪ We warn of the danger of the occupation imposing the Zionist educational curriculum on students in occupied Jerusalem, and consider this part of a systematic project aimed at re-shaping consciousness and entrenching the occupation. We affirm that our people and our children in Jerusalem are stronger than all attempts at erasure and Judaization. ▪ By imposing its curriculum, the occupation will not be able to impose its narrative on our students, and we affirm that the Palestinian identity in Jerusalem is too deep to be erased by imposed curricula or the occupation’s measures and policies. ▪ All policies of Judaization, settlement, land confiscation, home demolitions, and changing curricula will not grant the occupation any right in Jerusalem, and will not succeed in tearing the city away from its roots or separating its people from their present and history. ▪ The school, the book, and awareness are fundamental pillars in the battle for Jerusalem and the ongoing conflict with the occupation, and we stress that protecting education in Jerusalem is a national responsibility that requires the broadest official, popular, and institutional support. ▪ We call on educational and community institutions and parents to protect the awareness of Jerusalem’s children, strengthen their connection to the history of their city, its culture, and its Islamic and national identity, and confront attempts to erase the Palestinian memory or separate generations from their Arab and Palestinian extension.
